Chapter 12: Cheap Shot – Alex

Something has to change.

Ava could have died. I was right there and I couldn’t stop it from happening. It makes me feel powerless and it’s a feeling that I’m not willing to accept. This can’t go on.

The stalker has escalated things dramatically. They’ve gone from a stupid photo album and some annoying calls to potentially killing Ava and putting countless others at risk. I can’t let this happen again.

The police who attend in the aftermath are great. They’re understanding and kind, and they assure Ava that she isn’t in any trouble. She isn’t the only one who called 911, so they have witnesses who saw we weren’t in control of the car. Concerned drivers on the road had seen me trying to frantically stop the vehicle as we passed, until eventually, I managed to pull the right wire and disconnect it. It was pure luck.

Unfortunately, the local station is very limited in what they can actually do about this. This type of crime isn’t common—it’s the first that many of the officers have heard of. They’ve had self-driving cars crashing or malfunctioning, but in their experience, they’ve never seen one hacked. There’s little to no evidence of how it happened. It tells me that whoever is doing this is well off and has good resources at their disposal. The police don’t even know how to begin to investigate this aside from confiscating the car. They plan to send it to a specialist crime unit and we don’t even know if she will get her Tesla back at all.

They take us to the station, and they can’t believe what they’re hearing as I explain what happened. I pass Henry in the hall as we’re led inside. He locks eyes with me but doesn’t acknowledge that we know each other. I feel better knowing that I’m at his precinct. He might be able to get information, even if it’s some gossip from behind the scenes. Poor Ava expects that the police will be able to help right away, to catch whoever has done this, but the cops are clueless. They take our statements, then send us home.

We return late that night via cab, and Ava cries for hours. I stay by her side and try to support her. I hold her while she cries, and I comfort her until she eventually falls into a disturbed sleep. She tosses and turns but I manage to slip away.

I immediately call James.

“Hi, James, I’m sorry, I know it’s late,” I tell him as he picks up. The phone hardly rings so he must be awake and worried, waiting for me to call.

“The station called and explained everything that happened,” he tells me. I can hear the strain in his voice. How unhappy he is. How afraid. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for him. “Is she really okay?” he asks me.

I hesitate. “She’s lucky I was there. She could have died, James,” I reply severely. There’s no way to downplay this.
